Emergency Care

What to do if your pet has a medical emergency.

Sometimes, knowing when your loyal companion needs urgent veterinary care can be difficult. Unfortunately, situations requiring emergency care can also happen at any time, so it's important to be prepared to handle the situation appropriately. At Bloorcourt, our team is fully trained and equipped to handle veterinary emergencies.

If your pet requires immediate care, call us at 416-537-9677.

How do I know if my pet requires emergency care?

If your pet is showing symptoms or behaviours that are unusual for them, or if there is a situation you are unsure about, contact us for guidance. However, below are some typical signs that your pet may need urgent care:

  • Bloated, swollen, or painful abdomen
  • Difficulty breathing, extreme coughing or choking
  • Inflammation or injury to the eye
  • Uncontrolled bleeding, diarrhea, or vomiting
  • Unconsciousness or instability
  • Dilated pupils
  • Seizures
  • Inability to urinate (for male cats especially)
  • Inappetence or lethargy for a couple of days

Where do I go during after-hours if there is a medical emergency?

If your pet becomes seriously ill or injured when we are not available, please take them to your nearest 24-hour veterinary emergency clinic. If possible, phone the clinic on the way so that they can prepare for your pet's arrival. Please be aware that emergency clinics have been tremendously busy this year, and may be at capacity – if so, they will notify you when you cal, so that you can go to a different clinic.
