Scaredy Cats Day – A Special Day for Cats that are Scared of the Vet

Cats-only days aim to remove barriers that prevent cats from receiving the same level of veterinary care as dogs

TORONTO, August 21, 2018 – August 22nd is National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day, which inspired Roncy Village Veterinary Clinic (Roncy) and Bloorcourt Veterinary Clinic (Bloorcourt) to introduce special Scaredy Cat Days on Wednesday, August 22nd, 2018 (9 a.m. – 2 p.m.) at Roncy and on Friday, August 24th, 2018 (9 a.m. – 7 p.m.) at Bloorcourt.

In Canada, only 50% of cats receive regular veterinary care, compared to almost 80% of dogs. One of the reasons for this unequal treatment is that vet visits (starting with being put in a carrier and traveling to the vet by car or transit) can be stressful for cats and difficult for owners.

Scaredy Cats Day will showcase many of the ways that vet clinics can reduce this stress and remove barriers to cats receiving regular veterinary care:
– Coaching for owners on low-stress techniques to get cats in carriers
– Large-opening carriers available for owners to borrow at no charge
– Inexpensive and gentle pre-appointment calming medication available
– Calming cat pheromones used throughout the clinic
– Fear-free cat handling techniques used during exams

According to Dr. Mark Kinghorn, owner of both Roncy and Bloorcourt, “Many owners only bring their cat to the vet when they are sick or injured, but since cats are excellent at hiding signs of pain and illness, by the time they look unwell their health problems can be quite advanced, and they may have been in discomfort for some time”.

“Regular physical exams can help identify health issues early, when they are easier – and cheaper – to treat. This is particularly true for painful dental disease, and for kidney and thyroid disease, which are common in cats over 12 years old.”

Bloorcourt Veterinary Clinic (1079 Bloor St. West, was founded in 1984 and Roncy Village Veterinary Clinic (215 Roncesvalles Avenue, was founded in 2009. The teams at both clinics are dedicated to providing personalized and compassionate veterinary care to cats and dogs, and endeavor to treat every patient like their own pet. Bloorcourt was an innovator in introducing acupuncture for pets in Toronto several decades ago, while Roncy Village was the second clinic in the city to offer minimally-invasive laparoscopic (keyhole) spay surgeries. Both clinics welcome referrals and patients from across the city, and beyond.
